Front gardens may be entered irrespective of size, even if you just have a range of containers. You may also enter your community area or your whole street. Closing date for entry is 31st May.

When judging front gardens the judges are looking for  good practices under three headings: horticulture, design and environment. They use a combination of the following criteria to assist them in their decision making:

  • Horticulture:
    • Choice of and quality of plants, climbers, shrubs and trees.
    • Plant maintenance e.g. dead-heading / pruning
    • Lawn care and quality e.g. edging
    • Weeding
    • Cleanliness/ Orderliness/ Tidiness   

              

  • Design: 
    • General  effect and use of space
    • Use of colour
    • Placing  of pots and garden ornaments
    • Siting of paths, hedges and fencing
    • Overall impact.

 

  •  Environment
    • Conservation e.g. mulching, insect-attracting plants
    • Re-cycling   e.g. rainwater
    • Impact on neighbourhood
